Allegorical voyage
Humour is an integral part of the works of Steinberg, with writing and calligraphy (“I am a writer that draws”) very often being based on and accompanying the image and line.
Saul Steinberg (1914-1999)
Steinberg is a Romanian artist, who arrived in the United States during the war years and worked for the The New Yorker magazine which published almost 1200 of his drawings. He was principally a draughtsman, but also an illustrator and scenographer. He intervened as a cartoonist and satirist in an area between invention and pastiche and used all media used for drawing, black and colour pencils, charcoal, watercolour gouache, but also collage.
