Hans Hartung
Working first from studies during the 1950s, Hans Hartung continuously evolved his technique by inventing new creative methods that marked each stage of his career. Moving from the brush to scratching, then to scraping and spraying, the artist never stopped renewing his practice until the end of his life. During the 1980s, he began using a spraying machine to project colour on to large paintings. With no direct contact with the surface of the canvas, Hartung created compositions that were produced vertically. The artist’s hand is almost eclipsed by the use of the tool, and the result suggests a chance composition.
