Pierre Soulages
After travelling to the United States and Japan in 1957 and 1958, Pierre Soulages returned to Paris and moved into his studio in Rue Galande. Here he painted several canvases with a scraping technique, including Peinture 130 x 89 cm, 24 août 1958. Associating black with blue, the construction of the space and the depth brought by this composition is all the more striking. After the blue follows an intense black, which the artist scrapes to achieve several layers. Large black strips are then added by the painter, which bring material, rhythm and intensity to the ensemble.
