Atelier VI
Atelier VI (1950-51) encapsulates all of the artist’s research, It combines the interior of his studio – his favourite theme – with the outside and the bird that takes him to new places. Produced between 1949 and 1956, Braque’s Ateliers series comprises eight versions, numbered I to IX, Atelier IX, which closes the cycle, being the seventh; begun in 1951, it reached a first state in 1953 and was finally completed for an exhibition of all the works together, at Galerie Maeght, in 1956.
Georges Braque (1882-1963)
After Bonnard’s death, Georges Braque became Aimé Maeght’s mentor. They met in 1945, when Braque already enjoyed international renown. There followed a friendship that would last nearly 20 years. Even before Fondation Maeght came into existence, Saint-Paul-de-Vence was already a place favoured by artists. Every year, Braque would spend January and February here. He made a considerable contribution to the Fondation’s design (a pool and stained-glass window) and to expanding its collection.
