Café de la Fondation Maeght
Marguerite and Aimé Maeght asked Diego, like many other artists, to contribute to the project creating their Foundation at Saint-Paul de Vence. He designed the famous outdoor bar, with its stools, counter frame and the large outdoor lights. They commissioned him to make several chairs and tables, and he imagined, among others, the famous Cage where the butler Cat offered seeds to birds on a tray.
All of the café furniture: shelves, counter, lamp, chairs, stools and tables as well as all the decorative elements of the Fondation Maeght : benches, door handles, the lamps and floor lamps of the rooftop terraces were created by Diego Giacometti. He realized handles with Maeght’s initials, the half-moon shape of which echoed Josep Lluis Sert’s curved roofs.
Diego Giacometti (1902 - 1985)
Diego Giacometti was born on 15 November 1902 in Borgonovo, in the high Alpine valley of Bregaglia above Lake Sils, between Grisons, Engadine and the heights of Lombardy. His forename comes from his father’s admiration for the Spanish master Velázquez.
