Painter, sculptor, and printmaker Ellsworth Kelly (born in 1923) is one of the most prominent figures of abstraction. Kelly emphasized the relationship between abstraction and nature, which served as a source of inspiration for his forms and colors. From the outset of his career, he played a key role in the development of abstract art in the United States, due to the central importance he gave to the purity of form and color, eliminating any trace of gesture and doing away with the notion of space. The film reveals the early influences that became recurring leitmotifs in Kelly’s work.
Discussion with Jack Shear, Ellsworth Kelly’s husband, President of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation.
